3) Reports from the Library Communities
a.) AMPALS (Henderson)
At their last meeting, AMPALS discussed the formalization of their agreement with GALILEO and the possibilities of further collaboration with GPALS.
b.) GPALS (Bain)
Bain has assumed leadership from Martha Reynolds. They discussed the unexpected closing of Beacon Theological Seminary and the impact on their contractual commitments. The officers will be meeting to discuss approaches to ensuring this won’t happen in the future.
c.) DOE (Serritella)
The DOE has had to drop Kids InfoBits. Their arrangements for databases are almost finalized.
d.) GISA
No report. The group is having GALILEO database training today.
e.) TCSG (Summey)
Twelve colleges still have to be accredited by 2012. The curriculum has been changing and it may have impacts on GALILEO for the future. However, budget concerns are a factor.
f.) GPLS (Zimmerman)
Final statistics for GOLD borrowing and lending have been compiled for the final fourth quarter. Over 100 libraries have qualified for the reimbursement. They hope to have checks distributed in early September. The GOLD/GALILEO User Conference was a success. Attendance hit an all-time high of over 350. All of the presentations and materials are now available from the conference website. Few have responded to the post-conference survey. Public libraries are also affected by the budget cuts mandated for FY09 and FY10. GPLS has been discussing how to implement these. One possibility is to eliminate a GALILEO database. Public libraries are now winding down the summer reading program. This year’s program has been very successful.
g.) USG (Bray)
The USG is discussing how to reduce the budgets for GALILEO and GIL up to 10% and cover the costs for book delivery. The core curriculum discussions have been put on hold. The USG is sponsoring a faculty development series that is very interesting. The Georgia Library Quarterly’s cover features Rich Meyer and Charlene Hurt, recently retired directors of the libraries at Georgia Tech and GSU.
4) Report from Executive Director (Penson)
EBSCO has created some promotional materials for GALILEO and GALILEO libraries. Two brochures address “What is GALILEO” for the general public and for library staff. Posters will promote ConsumerHealth Complete and Georgia GoLocal and Literary Reference Center. These will be available both online and at upcoming conferences. They are also considering ways to help libraries in general publicize their services.
A consultant has provided the BOR with a report on the Office of Information and Instructional Technology and the services offered. While not yet distributed, the report is complimentary about the library-related services that are provided through the office.
An activity report was distributed to the group, including news on databases, the GALILEO upgrade, training, and other activities. The WestLaw Campus Research contract has not been finalized yet. The Georgia HomePlace project is planning for this year’s project. A project to help develop educator resources has been tabled. The Georgia Humanities Council is considering approaches to future growth and maintenance of the New Georgia Encyclopedia for which GALILEO is a partner.
The budget crisis is challenging because the targeted reductions are being revised as forecasts change. The current targets are 6%, 8%, and 10%. Each of the agencies is struggling with these questions. Contracts have been signed for GALILEO but agencies may need to reconsider expenditures, as will institutions, libraries, and communities. It is difficult to know exactly what the outcome will be because of these complexities. Penson hopes that access will be maintained in FY09, and that careful planning will help limit impacts of possible cuts in FY10. The Steering Committee needs to review the resource package for strategic changes (deletions and additions) in order to ensure the best possible outcome for all participants. The Electronic Collection Development Committee has been asked to lead this effort. Penson asked the committee chair Rachel Schipper to report. Schipper reported that the next step will be to convene the group. Along with current offerings, there are opportunities to look at new resources and reconsider the mix of resources for FY10, including the concept of a core set of resources and the aggregator packages. It might be possible for subject matter experts to focus on particular areas of interest. She asked the group to suggest participants for the committee via email (rachel.schipper@gcsu.edu). The group will find ways to work together without requiring travel. The group discussed databases that were and were not possible candidates for elimination as well as acquisition. 9. Next Meeting (Bray)
The next scheduled meeting will be held online at December 5, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. GALILEO will set up the meeting in Horizon Wimba.
10. , Other
The group welcomed Dr. Nancy Seamans, incoming Dean of Libraries for Georgia State University. She has come from University of Iowa and has previously been at Virginia Tech. The flooding in Iowa had caused great destruction to the music library building, and art museum. The main library has had to deal with flooded collections in the basement.
Carolyn Fuller distributed a picture of the Henry County Library children’s librarian after having eaten a bug (chocolate-covered) as part of the final of the summer reading program, entitled “Catch The Reading Bug.”
